Muzungu Joe Granata had a remarkable gift, he turned every group he touched into a family, or a basketball team. He made people feel comfortable, valued, and truly seen. With Joe around, you always felt like you belonged. All of us at AZBGC are forever grateful to Joe’s beloved wife Pina, his daughters, Cassandra and Samantha, his grandchildren, his extended family and his friends, for sharing this extraordinary man with us. Through their love and dedication, especially via the annual Muzungu Joe Legacy Golf Tournament, Joe’s dreams for the children and youth of Kamengo live on.

Joe cared deeply for every AZBGC child and youth. He never hesitated to lend a hand, whether playing Santa to raise school fees, cutting his hair for donations, or rallying friends and coworkers to support the cause. For Joe, it was always simple: “It’s all about the kids.” And his signature question, “When does the game start?” captured his joyful, action-oriented spirit.

Muzungu Joe was a giant among men. His warm hugs and encouraging smile live on through all who knew him. They are now part of the legacy passed on to future generations, something his family, friends, and community can carry forward in ways that bring meaning and joy to others. We are all better for having known Joe. Today, we continue his work, striving to fulfill his dreams for the youth of AZBGC and for mental health support at the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
