Education at AZBGC
Education remains central to our mission. We help children break the cycle of poverty, build resilient, and self-sustaining futures. With education, we focus on a few key initiatives:
-
School Fees Support: Over 135 students receive full or partial scholarships each year based on need, academic performance, and community volunteerism.
-
Computer Literacy: Club members and a few local schools gain access to hands-on digital skills training in our computer lab.
-
Library Services: Free access to books, tutoring, mentoring, and career guidance to support academic achievement.
-
Educational Trips: Local and international travel opportunities that expand students’ knowledge and global perspective.
-
Cultural Exchange: Club members visit other learning institutions and regularly welcome international guests, sharing the richness of African culture.
Teachers are frequently underpaid or absent leaving students without consistent instruction. Girls face additional challenges such as early marriage, menstruation-related absenteeism, and household responsibilities. Economic hardship also forces many children to drop out to support their families. These issues result in low literacy and numeracy rates, keeping generations trapped in poverty.
Yet, hope remains. With targeted interventions, like our library, computer lab, school fees program, girl-focused programs at our women and girls house, and workshops, we do our small part and unlock the potential of every child. Together, we can ensure that where a child lives doesn’t determine what they learn.
Education Equals Opportunity
Despite the fact that 93 students in our program have graduated, our community continues to face overwhelming barriers that prevent children from receiving quality schooling. Many local schools lack basic infrastructure, classrooms are overcrowded, teaching materials are scarce, and clean water and sanitation are often unavailable.
