Building Stronger Lives Through Sport & Play
At AZBGC, we believe that sports are more than just games, they are powerful tools for personal development, lifelong learning, and community connection. Through our sports programs, we inspire young people to grow in confidence, discipline, and teamwork, while building lasting bonds within and beyond our community.
We regularly partner with local schools, community groups, organizations, and even host international guests to organize friendly matches and tournaments. Our growing list of activities includes: Soccer, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Dodgeball, Pickleball, Chess, and Annual runs such as the Kabaka Run and Ottawa Race Weekend.
Why Sports Matter
The impact of sports at AZBGC goes far beyond the field or court. Our programs help:
Improve physical and mental health
-
Develop essential life skills such as leadership, communication, discipline, and teamwork
-
Promote respect, empathy, fair play, and community spirit
-
Open doors to education and travel opportunities
To date, 36 members of our club have received sports scholarships to educational institutions beyond our community, with many traveling to neighbouring countries, which is proof of the potential unlocked through sports at AZBGC.

Investing in the Future of Sports
We recognize the economic and social potential of sports. That’s why we’re working toward:
-
Renovating our current basketball court into a full-sized, multi-use facility to host basketball, volleyball, and pickleball tournaments.
-
Developing our soccer field to provide a safe, professional space for training and matches.
-
We are always collecting new and gently used sports shoes which creates a sense of belonging for children and youth who stop by our boys and girls club.
Basketball
Basketball is a powerful tool that helps children and youth build confidence, stay active, and develop life skills like discipline, teamwork, and leadership. The game keeps young people engaged, connected and off the streets while offering them hope, mentorship, and a place to belong. With minimal equipment and maximum impact, basketball is one of the most cost-effective ways to invest in youth, especially in underserved communities. A special thank you to all those who have donated shoes, balls and uniforms to AZBGC.
