Healthcare & Wellness

Personal well-being is an essential aspect of our programs for both boys and girls. We promote awareness through practical training and workshops that highlight the importance of physical fitness, mental health, and emotional wellness. These activities are conducted in a quiet and clean environment and often incorporate cultural elements such as drumming.

The AZBGC Women’s Resource Centre is a safe and empowering space where girls can engage in wellness discussions, receive mentorship, and develop skills such as sewing and baking. It also serves as a distribution point for donated supplies, including feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes, and sports bras. The centre offers opportunities for girls to play chess and netball, and it serves as a safe haven for those facing challenges at home. Most importantly, it is home to the AZBGC Vision Care Centre, which helps individuals with limited financial resources access new reading or distance glasses. The Vision Care Centre is open to all members of the community and beyond.

Our mental health and wellness program includes yoga, meditation, and fitness sessions, which are available to both youth and adults in the community. Access to a safe and peaceful environment for exercise, surrounded by trees, has become increasingly rare due to urbanization. Our wellness program is designed to help reduce obesity and combat the rising incidences of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Mental health is also nurtured through drumming, dancing, and music, which provide a powerful outlet for emotional expression, healing, and joy.

Lastly, healthcare and maternity care are key priorities during the annual Canada Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA) medical mission. These missions are organized in partnership with Ggoli Health Centre, where CACHA has contributed to the construction of a maternity ward (below), and Nkozi Hospital, where investments have supported the purchase of an anesthesia machine, ventilator, patient monitor, diathermy machine, and washing and drying machines for the operating room. During the COVID-19 pandemic, CACHA also assisted with a central oxygen equipment.

Maternity Ward Project

AZBGC has played an instrumental role in the ongoing construction of the Ggoli Health Centre. In addition to fundraising, AZBGC members have been actively involved in procuring materials, contributing to the physical building, and providing regular updates and financial reports.

We are especially grateful for the extraordinary financial support from our friends at CACHA, whose contributions have made much of the progress possible.

Once completed, the new maternity ward will be a lifeline, a symbol of hope and a catalyst for broader health development. It will save lives, strengthen families, and help build a healthier, more resilient community. We warmly welcome donations to help bring this important project to completion.

Annual Medical Mission

Hosting CACHA's volunteers at AZBGC has been one of our greatest honours. We recognize the importance and impact this medial mission  has had to members of our community. Truly, this initiative has been a lifeline to thousands, especially since this mission provides free services and is part of a lager strategy that includes education, training as well as infrastructure  improvement and investment like the current maternity ward being built. For 18 years, not only have health outcomes improved but our community has more reliable and resilient healthcare systems in place.  During the 2025 mission, 3,623 patients were treated, 60 surgeries were performed, 500+ dental extractions, 83 prescription glasses and 93 reading glasses were distributed along with 100 sawyer filters with a new buckets for clean drinking water.
